There’s bold color in the spring garden (at least as accents)! This is the ‘Key Lime Pie’ variety of Heuchera. The leaves change from chartreuse when they’re new to lime green as the leaves mature. (You’re seeing both old and new leaves here.)
The common name for Heuchera is ‘Coral Bells’, for the tiny pink ‘bells’ (flowers) that hang from thin stalks later in the season. There are a dozen varieties planted in the Chase Court gardens, in colors that range from bright green to red to deep purple. Heuchera is a low plant that looks great along our walkways, especially since some varieties give a good show (gardener talk!) right through the winter. —David
